era | Man Caves

When I asked Rich what he would like me to write about, he said 'Man Caves'
And although I will write about man caves one day in the future - promise! - what his request put in mind was the architecture we make for the people we love.
I have been thinking a lot about why we go on a journey to design + build a home

Who shines a light on your life?
And whose life do you shine your light on?

I wish I could bottle that light to have something physical to represent the care you can carry for another human being. Until that day, creating architecture for the people you care about acts as a vessel to capture that light.
I think that is why people take the time and put so much of their own effort into the journey to design + build architecture.

It is not for them - it is for who they care for.

I know it is true for the home Rich and I are designing together.

a little way to help you find your architecture

There is a lot of noise in the world about how you should do things and how you shouldn't.
Where you should put things and what you should include and more and more ..
.. You also carry around with you the habits of your past, that don't necessarily work for the lifestyle that you would like to live.

The spaces you make in your architecture should reflect YOU and the people who will share the spaces with you.
Have a good think about all of the little moments that make up your day.

Try to be objective about yourself and re-learn how you want to live each moment.
These are the moments that you design for.
These are the moments that you build your architecture for.
What do you do when you first wake up in the morning?
How do you get ready for the day?
Where do you eat your breakfast?
Where do you drink your coffee?
What do you do when you arrive home?
Where do you hang your bag?
What do you do next?

YOU HAVE ALL OF THIS INFORMATION.

And this is information you can use to design architecture to be specific to you.
If you don't think that you can take the information that you have and translate it into a design or a built form, find someone who can help you, so that the spaces you will live in are designed and built specifically for your every day moments.

Don't listen to anyone else tell you how you should live your life.
