WHAT DOES HOME MEAN TO YOU?

‘old English ham, or Germanic origin; related to Dutch heem and German heim’

home is different to every person.

home is a physical space.

home is the people who inhabit that space.

home is a selection of simple moments held in your memories.

home is a feeling made up of those memories.

Smells, sights and sounds all evoke the feeling of home.

‘.. it is supposed to smell differently to each of us, according to what attracts us, and I can smell freshly mown grass and new parchment and …’ - Hermione, Harry Potter, JK Rowling

What does the place you call a home mean to you?

What is waiting for you across the threshold?

Is it where you’ve been or where you’re heading to?

How does a space make you feel?

That is the magic of architecture for me.

When you have found the space that feels like home, you know you have found the architecture that is right for you.

What is the feeling of your home?

To me, architecture is the physical representation of a combination of individual elements which are both tangible as well as intangible. The result is a unique space with a unique architectural language and it is that space which has an impact on you – on how you move, on how you interact, on how you feel.

‘Architecture to me means, to keep the wind and dirt out of a childs eyes.’ – Christine Landorf, Architect

‘Architecture to me is a combination of material and memory – an object that contains our shared culture and provides shelter to allow that culture to happen.’ – Donna Sink, Architect

What does architecture mean to you?

What type of architecture is home for you?

Is it a built form?

Is it the space on the grass under a tree?

Is it the deck of a boat?

Is it the back of a van?

How do you find your home?

In what ever way you are going about finding your home and whatever type of home that will be, you will probably have people help you out along the way.

Who will they be?

How will they help you?

I’ve been thinking a lot about the agenda behind architecture.

The why that each person or organisation has for making their architecture.

An architects agenda might be to make a memorable architectural statement.

A project home builder may be focused on an outcome with an efficient cost.

A prefabricated organisation might be to make the most efficient built outcome.

The only person who has your agenda at the front of their mind - in an untainted version - is you.

When you go out into the world to find the people that will help you find your home, consider their agenda and if it aligns with your own. By finding people who share your agenda, it will help you find the people who will make your purpose a reality.
